Hands down, my favorite part of Thanksgiving dinner is the stuffing! Every year since I can remember, our family has always made the same stuffing recipe. When I was a little kid, I remember my grandma pulling her big, hand-cranked grinder out from the cabinet to make this stuffing. It clamped onto the edge of the kitchen counter and she would let us crank the handle as it chopped up the onions and celery. Free child labor, right? haha!
My nana passed away over 10 years ago now but I love being able to make her recipes at the holidays. It makes me feel as if a small part of her still lives on. In the South, the kitchen is the heart of the family. It is where recipes and traditions are passed down. It is where families blend and grow, and I can’t wait to start teaching my own daughter how to make my nana’s recipes.
This stuffing recipe is so good and will be the hit of your thanksgiving dinner! I hope you love it as much as I do and feel as if your family is right there in the kitchen making it alongside you, just as I do every time I make it!
Ingredients
- 1 large loaf of white bread
- 3-4 large onions, finely chopped
- 1/2 pound pork sausage
- 1/2 can cream of mushroom soup
- 3 celery stalks, finely chopped
- 2 eggs
- 2 tbsp poultry seasoning (more to taste)
- 1 tsp sage
- salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- The night before, lay the slices of bread out on the table to dry out
- Break bread into small bite sized pieces
- Cook pork sausage lightly - don't brown
- Add onions and celery and cook a little
- Add 1/2 tbsp poultry seasoning
- Let cool then add to bread and mix
- Mix in cream of mushroom soup
- Mix in 2 eggs (Be sure the bread mixture is cool when adding, you don't want to cook the eggs)
- Add another 1/2 tbsp of poultry seasoning and 1 tsp sage. Taste and add more poultry seasoning as needed. (I tend to like a stronger poultry seasoning taste and add more)
- Add salt and pepper to taste
- Stuff in turkey and cook according turkey according to package directions OR spread in greased baking dish and bake at 350 degrees for 30-45 minutes or golden brown on top.
